It was just veiled as a compliment, i.e. "This is classic Adele."

She got a pass before because she was a nobody that was becoming a megastar. She's a megastar now. So now her expectations are different. Nobodies can release the same music over and over, and the general public won't care. But once you're a musician that's known on a massive scale, then you have to alter your music in some way, or you will get criticized for releasing the same material over and over. Adele is not immune to this. That's how it has worked for years now.
