Dorm. I was a little spoiled because the dorms I stayed in for my two years on campus were new and had bathrooms en suite, but still.

You will miss out on so much if you commute, being on campus all the time is one of the best parts of 1st/2nd year. Being able to go hang out with people at any time, go to eateries whenever (I don't know how this works on other campuses but we had coffee shops/restaurants open after the cafeterias closed), just not having to drive to class.

Going off of my post before -- I recommend dorm 1st or 1st/2nd year. Living off campus is great since you can throw parties more easily.

The bathrooms are disgusting, you'll hate your roommate within two weeks, and the rules and occasional unplanned 4am fire alarms are awful - all of that is true.

I, however, happen to have made literally all my friends in college in my hall, and my hall had most of the students who are most involved in leadership and organizations despite having less than a fourth of all first year entrants.

If you're an hour or more away from your school, live on campus for at least a year. Try it out, see how it feels. It's different at every school and it's different for every person but it's an experience that you should have.

Dorms are nice for making friends . I had a blast staying on campus. Everything is so convenient. Unfortunately I was broke after paying for the tuition & housing (I refused to take out loans).

depends on the kind of guys you live with. the guys on my floor were pretty neat. 2 were gay and an inordinate number of the others had manners.
the hot straight guy was surprisingly quiet and low-key esp given that he was in a frat.

Though when I lived in a house...those guys were messes.

Dorming is way better if you're a social person and wanna enjoy your college experience, but if you're extremely anti-social like much of this site, then commuting is probably a better option.

Tbh, I am able to do all of this by commute. Only I can actually pick up friends and go to more places around campus and in the cities. Plus all people hang out around campus all day anyway so it's not like you're isolated if you commute. The only thing I'm missing out on is making new friends living in the same place as me but I am still able to find some otherwise.

But that's my experience.

I commute and honestly I prefer having the money.

Dorms for the most part are really **** You pay so much just for a tiny room and unless you have rich parents, you're gonna be eating **** for a while. I come from a poor background so for me living in dorms isn't a possibility right now.

I do think that moving out is a great idea though because it's more convenient. I have to travel an hour to get to my university and it wears you thin after a while. Especially when there's 1 hour gaps between lectures or you have have to come in for a few minutes. And obviously the social side to it is amazing. The parties and events are great if you can afford that lifestyle. And the freedom that you get by living out is great if you have strict parents.

I'm gonna move out next year or the year after but I'm gonna work a lot so that I can afford a really good house/flat and still be able to afford other things like food and travel.

I'm totally lazy and sometimes irresponsible, so staying in a dorm is more convenient. Plus I have an in suite bathroom. The computer labs are Also convenient. We also have a kitchen on my floor! We have strict rules against loud music and disruptive behavior after hours. The meal plan is also nice. And it's fun to be able to walk around at anytime and feel safe. People are always on campus doing something, so it feels like a cool little town/community.

Dorms have been a horrible experience for me so far. I live with 4 disgusting straight guys who I can't stand. You'll make friends in your classes, do yourself a favor and never stay in a dorm.
