And the people screaming about her being the most successful artist and whatnot probably only know that from Wikipedia or any other source speaking about the most Top albums and such (...)
That's me.
I'm like you, if I ever heard one of her songs I didn't know it was her.
He is 16 years old and not from the United States. He's only speaking what he knows. Calm the heck down. I have never heard a Barbra Streisand song IN MY LIFE, and if I have I sure as Hell don't remember or didn't know it was her. I only know the hag from Meet The Fockers and she was pretty damn funny.
The only Barbra song I have ever heard in my life is that duet she did with Céline Dion in the late 90's.
And yes, she's barely known outside the U.S. However, I do recognize her mainly 'cause I watch a lot of American TV shows and related stuff.

Um, why? In the span of two albums, they went from debuting at #15 to debuting at #2 in the States. And they debuted over Mariah freaking Carey to do so.

Mariah was never a big first-week sellers; her album always became smashes through a slow burn. "Emancipation of Mimi" (and "E=MC2," but only by association) were exceptions to this, and now it's returned to normal. Not to say this album will be huge (I don't think it will), but considering she blew all her momentum on her last era, she shouldn't be surprised at this major come-down.

That's all.
- I'm 18 and European. Irrelevant excuse.
- He posted it twice and didn't bother to find out for himself. Dumb and lazy.
- Besides, there's very few female artists as big as her in history and this is a music related site. So when someone here says they know her, it's pretty easy to believe them. Don't underestimate the posters here.
- I didn't say I know her songs, I said I know her. Everyone knows The Rollings Stones but few can name more than a couple of their songs. Sorry you didn't understand.

I know I'm kind of late, but I just had to give my input on how shocking this chart became this week.
I'm no Barbra fan, by ANY means. But the woman deserves her respect. She has one of the hugest stanbases who have stayed loyal to her all these years. I really don't know her music much, but for those who haven't heard the pure power and emotion of her voice, just listen to The Way We Were and then come back and judge.
I also can't believe Paramore cracked the Top 10, let alone Top 2. Ignorance felt really, well, ignored by everyone outside of Alternative Radio, but I'm glad they surprised me. Brick By Boring Brick could be a force to reckon with on multiple formats.
Mariah Her problem is she keeps trying to keep up with current trends to get a hit, but the fact is, if she wants another TEOM era, she has to stick with the sound that made her popular in the first place. Very few artists can achieve perpetual longevity by creating songs tailor made for radio.
Breaking Benjamin and Alice in Chains rounding out the Top 5 Solid bands. It's a shame AFI couldn't join them though.
