Israel has a cohabitation law for gay couples and registers foreign marriages (both straight ones and gay ones), but to get married inside the country you have to go to a religious leader as civil marriage isn't the law there. After several attempts to change this in Parliament, the tactic for LGBT has shifted to a lawsuit. In case their suit is denied they will try to repeal the law that only allows religious marriages to be performed.
Quote:
Israel’s National LGBT Task Force, also known as The Aguda, today filed a same-sex marriage petition with the Supreme Court. The petition, a first for the group, declares that if rabbinical courts continue to refuse to authorize same-sex marriages, the Supreme Court has the authority to order civil courts to do so.
The Aguda says that if their petition is denied, they will then work towards abolishing Article 1 of the rabbinical courts, which outlaws civil marriage. The top-linked story notes that 70% of Israelis backed same-sex marriage in a 2013 poll.
