Please find me ONE actress at 50 years old who has played teenage Elphaba. The oldest I can think of is Ana Gasteyer who finished in the role when she was 39.

Either way it's not unheard of especially when it comes to film musicals. It comes into affect more so on stage because of issues of stamina and just overall vocal state. If they find an actress well suited enough of the role than great, but unless either one of them ends up looking like Jessica Lange within the year there's nothing that should be barring them from being cast.
Ultimately my top choice for Elphie is and always will be Eden Espinosa, I just really hope that whoever they get in the role can actually handle the vocal. Into The Woods and Les Miz greatly suffered because of that.
