Chipotle Shuts Seattle, Portland Stores After E. Coli Outbreak; More Cases Expected
Health officials expect the number of people sickened by an E. coli outbreak linked to Chipotle restaurants in Washington state and Oregon to grow while they investigate the cause of the infection.
As of Friday, three people in the Portland area and 19 people in western Washington had become sick from E. coli. Seventeen of them had eaten at a Chipotle restaurant during the past few weeks.
Eight people have been hospitalized but no deaths have been reported.
After people started hearing about the outbreak, more people will probably go to the doctor and join the list of potential cases, said Marisa D'Angeli, medical epidemiologist with the Washington State Department of Health.
D'Angeli noted that Chipotle has been cooperative and voluntarily shut down all its restaurants in the two states.
The reopening of the 43 Chipotle restaurants in Oregon and Washington will be dictated by the investigation, said company spokesman Chris Arnold. “Right now, that is the priority,” he said.

Just as Chipotle execs thought they'd finally heard the words "batch-test" for the last time, the chain's messy E. coli outbreak has come back, spreading to four more states. The CDC says new cases linked to something at Chipotle (they're still not sure what) have now appeared in New York, California, Ohio, and Minnesota, in addition to the cases already reported in Washington and Oregon. The tally of infected people now stands at 45, and 16 have been hospitalized. It's likely that not all of the cases have been reported yet, so expect more to surface.
I've never eaten there but I had a friend who was addicted so I went with her many times to a now closed down store in Portland. She's a health freak. I should check in on her and kii.
The problem is they don't use antibiotics in their food and the American food supply is not nearly as clean as it should be. Hope they get it sorted out
Chipotle is nasty. Several years ago the one in my town got like 300 people sick from hepatitis or something because an employee wasn't washing his hands after going potty. #2 btw
I got tired of it when I had to start bringing my own guacamole. It's up to 2.50 for a one spoon dropping. I can make an entire batch for about that cost. It's just a very over rated fad and I hope all those ill people get well
I Googled this place and the only one in my area was apparently permanently closed. Poor that.
The one in my city is a literal ghost town, there's never anyone there whereas our Chipotle had a ridiculously long line, but Qdoba has quesadillas and queso unlike Chipotle, which places it far superior to Chipotle for me. I'll be surprised if it doesn't shut down by the end of the year tho
