The former did well as her debut, but she was not well known when that happened. The latter happened because of X Factor auditions. It was not a big hit initially at all. The poster is quite right. RITD made people pay attention to her in a big way, and the Brits changed everything here.
Those sales are insane people. The sales from Adele, Leona, Cheryl and Alex never ever happen here as people do not connect with music in such a way to buy a single en masse like that. Often, those sales represent significant musical moments in UK pop which are often linked to either a big televised event or cultural event. Shifting more than 150k first week for a single is massive. Adele has done incredibly well. She wouldn't be able to match the sales Leona and Alex did for the singles because they had millions of people watching the song being performed and then witnessing it go on sale immediately. There was a reason the distinction was made from those two records, because it's a real achievement, and it won't be beaten again from a solo artist I think.
