I think that you can't tell a minority what to feel offended by and if she as a native woman felt offended by the costume then people should understand that. Their response was rude.

However Pocahontas is a movie character....so the issue is deeper and starts with the representation of natives in movies and TV

Mess. Cultural appropriation confuses me. I get dressing up as a culture is offensive but this is a Disney movie character. She might have issues with the wrong portrayal of Pochontas from real life v the movie, but is it wrong if kids want to be Pochontas. What about Mulan and Jasmine?

also it's generally not offensive if a minority "appropriates" another culture. Like if a black person was wearing a kimono for Halloween no one would say anything, but would if it was a white person

I like this quote. As a minority (the fact that I have to say this before I say something), I admit that when addressing racial issues, people get criticised for whatever they do. It's probably true that if a culture is not properly represented, there's criticism, but if you use the culture, then there's still criticism, and I've seen it multiple times in similar issues. But IDK. She's more inclined to understand those types of issues but I can't help but also get annoyed when people criticise both options for being racist.

It's different if you're going as someone who already exists. We have Native American people today who still feel the effects of the Native extermination which took place over 300 years ago.

I don't think anyone is denying that bad things happened to them...they are just dressing like them because they think the outfits are appealing/beautiful/interesting etc.

I just think people are looking too deep. If you are going that deep, what about all of the slave-labor workers who are creating all of the other types of Halloween costumes and the clothes that we wear every day? They are currently suffering too but is anyone concerned about those Chinese/etc. workers as much as the Native Americans?

People ARE concerned about them. The issue is people wearing offensive outfits which offends people and belittles their culture/mocking them on Halloween, not sweatshop/forced labor in Eastern countries. It's the same logic with the "Black Lives Matter" vs "All Lives Matter"

But what about the lives of people who really want to dress like Native American people? Do their lives matter? Should they be restrained from dressing the way they want to dress?
