But since you didn't make it totally clear, the movie theatres get a big chunk of the receipts - about half for the US, more overseas. They need the money to cover operating costs.
(And then the concession stands for actual profits.)

Movie theatres actually make next to nothing on ticket sales (Unless the film has been playing for while.)
I work at one, and we make literally 10% of the ticket sales on the first two weeks its in release and it slowly goes up from there.
