I usually use them, but honestly if the store has a sufficient number of employees then they ****ing suck lol. I think people forget the process where you have to scan something, place it in the bagging area, then WAIT for the scales to recognise the item and process it.

Sainsbury's have the best self-checkouts here imo, Morrisons probably being the worst. Working in a Local though I'm praying we never get them because they'll slow everything down and then we'll have to take it in turns to man the checkouts for idiots cocking up and... *sigh*.
