COPENHAGEN, Denmark (CNN) -- Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, will host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, the International Olympic Committee announced Friday.

The announcement brought tears to Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who dabbed his eyes with a handkerchief several times in a news conference afterward.

Congrats Brazil, The Olympic games will bring big time revenue to the country. I may save up to make the trip down there to support the U.S. and some Brazilian teams during the games.

If Olympics games should be held just in rich countries this would be held just in US/Japan/Europe.

Rio had the best pitch to the IOC. That was it. Absolutely fair and correct decision although personally I would have liked to see Chicago win.

Sucks. I would've been so happy to see them here. With the Obama history you'd think it would be a lock but I guess not.

So they should change their rules. Only rich countries should participate. Isn't it a good way of livin' in a bubble? Isn't a good way of thinking you're better than the others?


Anyway, Brazil really deserves it. We don't have only monkeys and violence as some people think.

PRESSED. FYI, like any other city from a developing country, Rio de Janeiro has income distribution problems. That's it.

Oh yeah! Rio de Janeiro is one of my favorite places of ALL time! Im so happy! I hope by 2016 I'd be able to fund my Rio grand trip and see the Olympics! I wanna watch the synchronized swimming firsthand.

I wanted Madrid to win But honestly, I'm glad it's not Chicago, there's no way our local government could handle it.

Good. South America has NEVER had an Olympics, and it's about time that a country there got it, especially one as big as Brazil. Spain and the US have both had Olympics recently, and Japan had a Winter Olympics recently, too. Let some other countries have some fun, too.

Besides, at least there's a chance that sports will air live in the States in 2016, considering that Brazil is an hour ahead of the Eastern Time Zone. Thank god. 2008 was BRUTAL in that regard, and London could be a bit harsh, too.

How about instead of spending money on a gigantic stadium, we create a budget for a better infrastructure? And how about we improve schools and after-school programs to stop gang murders like the one that happened just a little while ago to that student.

Chicago has other things to worry about. Rio de Janiero deserves this.
