Not to nitpick but wasn't 2012 technically the peak of the digital age? 2009 has some of the biggest individual songs but overall, sales volume and average weekly sales peaked in 2012.

I don't think 2009 was the peak either. I think the song was just ridiculously catchy enough to spark enough attention, also it samples this classic:

The biggest factor, though, as mentioned, was the suppression of the song itself.
