Even if you put Piracy aside - Spotify is necessary. From a cultural stand-point, we were headed that way. All forms of entertainment are headed that way or are already there.

Taylor is great but yeah, I think her opinions on Spotify are wrong for a multitude of reasons.

Streaming is actually really helping the industry.

Streaming, if anything, is actually helping the industry. It's getting people to legally pay in some way for music.

Maybe major artists see a shift in what they make but make a million less is not hurting anyone like Taylor Swift.

Spotify has been saying over and over that artists should take it up with their labels. Spotify is yet to make a profit.

Streaming has cut down piracy a lot. These days, everyone wants everything in one place, which is why streaming is taking over, both in the music industry and the TV/film industry.

I just wrote a paper on Spotify's impact on the music industry. I did a LOT of research, and while I understand some of Taylor's reasons, I still think that Spotify and music streaming services are in fact helping the industry to move forward.

I know that the streaming model is the future (the present actually) but I also think they need to pay those who deliver what Spotify is streaming. And it's not only about the artists but a high number of people from producers, engineers to the people cleaning up the studio.

Getting 0,0001 cents per stream won't keep artists afloat.

Spotify pays out nearly 70% of their total revenue to rights holders (so the labels), it's not their fault artists and song writers have ****** contracts with their labels.
And besides, they do not pay based on the number of times a song or album was streamed. An artist's royalty is based on several things (which country the song has been streamed, how many paying subscribers they have in that country, royalty rate etc.). But if you were to count it out, the number would be between $0.006 and $0.0084.

Adele is an exception

I bet some people will completely dismiss the OP though, and still blame Spotify (and only Spotify because apparently VEVO records are important or something) for their faves living in boxes asking for spare change. (Metaphorically, of course.)

That's stupid! I didn't buy a lot of music before (an album per year or so) and I used to download everything illegally. Now for a couple of months I pay Spotify Premium (which is 10€ per month), so I spent around 120€ in music per year. WAYY more than before.
