I think it's because society, as a whole, has taken a more mindful approach as to making sure everyone gets their fair share. There are a lot of stereotypes that can form a harmful mindset when perpetuated - but at the same time, there are times where it's taken too far.
I think context is very important at the end of the day, and I think maybe you have to think before you do something. However, I think the culture of tearing people to shreds for their ignorance is not helping anyone - at the end of the day, would you shame a student for not knowing the right answer or would you try to explain why their answer is wrong? Some people just don't wanna listen, and that's a shame but I think you have to really consider people don't usually set out with bad intentions.
Like I'm not gonna lie, I'm a big SJW - but you can't expect perfection from people and hunting people down. That doesn't do anything but hurt people in the long run, and that doesn't make you any better.
