Alphamon, the villain, is apparently able to manipulate time, and the movie hints that the entire 02 season was an alternate timeline created by him to f with the digi-destined. So when he destroys the 02, he's just erasing that timeline, and they cease to exist. Poor Davis

The spoilers from the digimon forum. Apparently Alphamon's dialogue in the film hints that more will be revealed, but this will primarily be the big twist in the series. It also makes sense, given how much more popular that 01 characters are.
