Any movie starring Matt Damon in a lead role will never be able to stand on its own merit or have longevity, seeing as Matt Damon is untalented (and ugly, and racist). "The Martian" was all promotion and hype with zero substance. That's why it had zero word-of-mouth traction after people saw it, unlike "Gravity." No one cares about Matt Damon. "Passenges" with Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt will probably perform the same. "Joy" will flop badly.
