A lot of the early 00s fashion was 70s/early 80s influenced (see polos with popped collars, hip huggers and flared jeans, peasant shirts, trucker hats, tracksuits, fishnets, halter tops, colored lens sunglasses, ribbed sweaters, off-the-shoulder tops, and the "vintage" graphic t-shirts.)
Fashion is cyclical. It borrows from the past while adding something new every time.
As of now, we're trapped with late 80s styles/fits in 90s colors. The next 10 years will be all about 90s fashion and the fit that was in then, with late 90s colors and eventually at the turn of the decade, very late 90s fashion and so on. It always works that way. About a 25 year cycle or so.
