It has nothing to do with the amount of episodes. Depends on the show, but I think that if it stays consistent, series deserve no less than at least 4 or 5 seasons. It varies based on timing, you do not want there to be too much or too little. Anyway, it was the writing and what they chose to do with the show that brought it down. It wasn't because it was past its time.
Although I liked a few, one of their biggest mistakes was introducing new characters, or at the very least, not introducing them sooner and then have them disappear once the New York storyline came. Another mistake was featuring too many songs per episode and it kinda became a lot about covering recent radio hits later on. I also think they took away some of the dramatic element and focused too much on comedy.
I feel sad because obviously Finn and Rachel didn't get to have their happy ending, and even in certain episodes up until the end, there were some golden moments. It also hurts because it is already too late for them to try and fix anything or create something new. I doubt that it will happen, but I would love for them to do ONE movie or some type of special.
