Duolingo and Memrise are amazing apps.

I use memrise for Japanese and it's great. They have a ton of languages and even some non language related stuff.
Duolingo is also good

I learned French for five years at school, got an A*, and now remember close to nothing. Assimilation is THE best way to learn a language.

I am learning Portuguese through the Michel Thomas Method. It's really got me going and I'm forming some hard ass sentences already. And then watch a lot of movies and music and you will slowly understand as you go along.

Start with online books or secondhand textbooks to learn some basic grammar. Conjugation is key for French. Pronunciation is another huge hurdle for mastering it. To develop fluency, look for native speakers of French. Skype would be a good alternative.

Buy Crash course AP French and Culture books. They're easy to digest and quick. Then hardcore study what you don't know.
