I'll try to make a very long story short:
Gay history and trans history is intertwined. For all you drag-hating gays, like it or not, drag is a HUGE part of gay culture and lgbt culture. The Ballroom Scene and the Stonewall Riots were the historical movements that made lgbt present to the public.
Ballroom Scene: Gheys would dress up in drags as a "**** you" to the people who oppressed them. Example being "executive realnesss" where they'd dress up as the "executive official-like people" who had declined them jobs and "Banjee Realness" where they'd dress as ghetto and street-like as possible to mimic the ghetto stereotype they're used to being called. Trans people would participate in these balls because, at the time, trans people were just "feminine gays" or "butch women". Some of those gays who dressed in drag were actually transgender, some were just playing a character. Watch "Paris is Burning" to learn more about the Ballroom Scene. Edit: Half of the MAJOR drag houses were RUN by trans people. Most notably House of Xtravaganza. Trans people and gays were the main partakers in the ballroom scene.
(P.S. If I ever see a black girl get mad at a gay man for acting like a "black woman" I will go OFF. Miss Thang, Fierce, and that "black girl slang" is FROM the ballroom scene. It was where african americans and gays and all other minorities would join together to have a little bit of fun while they could. Black history and Gay history share a common background) @AzealiaBanks (still stan for her music)
Stonewall was a gay club where a lot of gays and trans people would be able to meet freely. Gays were be able to go in full geish (drag) and trans people would be able to act like they gender they knew they should be.
Tl;Dr - Gay history has a lot to do with drag culture and drag culture was mostly dominated by trans people. Gays and trans people share a LANDMARK background.

Thank you for schooling the people.
Also... majority of the transgenders I know or have ever come in contact with all started as what? Gays & Lesbians. There's a whole army of pre-op Transgendered females out in the world that still have and use their man parts like its no tomorrow on other men. A lot of time its transitioning of the gender but thats about it.
