I think Ru is in a unique position. No, he's not trans, but he's been identified by a large portion of the public as trans and has been discriminated against in a manner similar to the discrimination trans people face. I think it's easier to discount Ru's points coming from our more touchy-feely society we have today; he preaches learning through hardship because that's all he ever had.
I get his position and kinda agree with it, but I would never impose my views on someone clearly offended. I don't mind my friends calling me a f@g or something cos the intent is funny, but if someone said "I don't feel comfortable with you using that word", I would absolutely stop because it's not my place to be like "get over it, get thicker skin" etc.
