I've noticed society seems to just not "understand" that some people are mixed race.
Whenever race is discussed with Mariah for example ppl want to either claim her as exclusively black or as exclusively white when in fact she is biracial! Why is biracial erasure so prominent? Do ppl still not understand how it works or...?

This is the first time I speak of this but as someone who is of multiple ethnic backgrounds myself I've always been asked about my race and what I identify with more. When I state that I am of Spanish, Moroccan and French descent ppl always make comments like "yeahhhh...but what race do you identify with the most?" or "oh but you look like this (insert race) more so you're that" like wth.

Anyways what are you thoughts on biracial erasure by society?
Do you agree that ppl seem to still not "get" what being biracial is?

Yes I'm mixed with Hispanic and Black but everyone always says I have to pick one.

Society "erases" biracial people because of the one drop rule - you used to have to pick a race, or the race was chosen for you (and you were punished for it.)

Society just seem to not care for anything with "bi".

I think it's because too many people like to think in "either or". The Mixed mentally in America haven't really set in yet. I imagine we'll see more of a shift in attitude once white people start losing their strong majority.

no sis not at all. I'm just stating what I am. It's like when ppl say they are "black" or they are "white". why is it that when someone says they are of multiple backgrounds or bi racial or w/e that ppl think they are either A: showing off or B: embarrassed of being 1 side.

I catch myself calling biracial friends black unintentionally. I think we're just conditioned to put someone in a box and it's definitely not right.

I guess it does have to do with the one drop rule, that people have this idea that you have to pick one race and one race only to identify is. It's moronic though, you are whatever races you are. To tell a person that is a mixture of races that they have to choose one to identify as and ignore the others even though they're also a part of them is incredibly ignorant

It's weird. People always ask: "What are you mixed with"? And then I tell them, "I'm half latino and half black." And they say, "You don't have a spanish accent. And you look like Thomas Lancaster DuBois and sound like a Caucasian news anchor."

I know the technicalities around being those races but as someone who has Moroccan family members I can tell you I don't feel like it fits societies interpretation of "Caucasian". it fits scientific interpretation for sure but it does not feel like our 21st century definition of "Caucasian".

Honestly, because humans are obsessed with labelling and sorting things into categories and they hate it when someone or something doesn't fit exactly into one category.

But no one is going to call them black as in subsharan black. Besides it's not mixed it's just white or whatever.

Besides you need to learn the one drop rule. Anyone with one drop of black blood was considered black. This was extended to other races. Like there was a rule on the US where if you had an Asian parent you were Asian. So no matter how many white relatives you have, you're never white enough unless you hide it. Which is why we have the white passing issue.

And besides what is mixed race? Many people are mixed race, some are more apparent than others.
