I never realized how accurate and relevant that film is, in terms of white privilige. Gab Union's Isis described it in a nutshell:
Shade. But is it true? "Twerking" was a staple in urban communities long before Miley even auditioned for Hannah Montana. The term "ratchet" has been popularized in the media (especially social media). And now there are people in my university using the phrase, "You're fried" as if it's this hip, new jargon--but that was something introduced to me in elementary school.

There are plenty of examples (see "Dreamgirls" and the "got me a Cadillac" fiasco).
What is it about urban/ethnic culture that compels people of other races to want to adopt our lingo? And why are those ideas or traits highlighted primarily when white people participate?
