Shade. But is it true? "Twerking" was a staple in urban communities long before Miley even auditioned for Hannah Montana. The term "ratchet" has been popularized in the media (especially social media). And now there are people in my university using the phrase, "You're fried" as if it's this hip, new jargon--but that was something introduced to me in elementary school. There are plenty of examples (see "Dreamgirls" and the "got me a Cadillac" fiasco).

What is it about urban/ethnic culture that compels people of other races to want to adopt our lingo? And why are those ideas or traits highlighted primarily when white people participate?

I noticed that and I'm guilty of it myself.

When I see a black girl with loud hair colors I think she's ghetto but when I see a white girl do it, it seems normal.

It's weird because I can actually feel myself shying away from the vernacular that I grew up on (ebonics) in work settings. Luckily I have an extensive vocabulary, but what about the black kids that don't and only know how to communicate in that way? Society places the "ignorant" label on them. Regardless of how it happens (consciously or subconsciously), it happens. They're not "employable" in the eyes of a business person. But what's backwards is that a white person could go in for a job interview, let one of our ebonics terms slip out of their mouths to showcase their personality, and what happens? They're labeled as "charming" or "personable."

I swear I've seen it happen like a million times.

That's a bold assumption, hun. But your first statement lets me know how deluded you may be, so speaking with you may prove to be absolutely useless.

Of course there are some black people that are slackers. But there are slackers in every race.

I'm just asking why do ideas that were introduced by ethnic groups only become acceptable once a white person popularizes it? It has nothing to do with work ethic. That person you quoted may have comprehension issues.

This movie was MILES ahead of its time, I think. I rewatched it labor day weekend and was shocked at how forward thinking it was. There's a reason it's an iconic masterpiece
