AHS is never "scary". It has me uneasy at some points, has a lot of "WTF" moments, and sometimes can make me (or others) uncomfortable, but it's never outright scary.
Asylum is probably the closest the show has come. Oh and that Home Invasion from MH was actually good. I do know plenty of adults who find the show too scary

Like most things in horror productions, it's the realism that's scary. The fear I get seeing a twinkish monster rape a man with a drill is completely different to the fear I get watching the home invasion as said above. Psychological fear is scary, and with certain aesthetics it can leave an impact of creepiness.
But in the situation above, Max's scene would have left a lot more shell shocked in fear had he just been raped. That sounds... weird, almost horrid to type, but what I mean is, being invaded and brutalised in a dodgy hotel by a sadistic pervert is a much more realistic horror situation, it's something I would fear. But knowing monsters aren't real, Max's scene gives off the effect of discomfort, but I'm not really ever going to be left scarred with fear thinking about something like that happening to me. Because the bottom line is, it never will.
