What you described however, is a diet. Limiting unhealthy food to small portions and getting a mix of every food group is by far better than plain unhealthy food.
You don't have to be a vegetarian, be on a paleo diet, or eat just fruit and nuts to be on a diet.

This is only if you lose a very large amount of fat very quickly. Diet and exercise is the best combination to lose fat so people lose fat quicker this way than by just dieting or just exercise.
