I used to live in Pasadena and its close enough to Los Angeles and Hollywood. The Metro takes you right to Little Tokyo, Hollywood, Downtown L.A., and China Town. Or, if you're driving, the 110 starts in Pasadena and its about a 15 minute drive to L.A. without traffic.
Look up the Pasadena Convention Center, there were nice hotels near there, Hilton or Marriott. Plus, Old Town Pasadena is a nice, trendy vibe and you can go to The Huntington Library. It's huge, has a bunch of old art museums, botanical gardens, and the brunch there is fantastic.
