It has happened before, more than once. It's a case of suicide though (well at least that's what the authorities have decided on). Thankfully the bodies weren't on display for long.

Body Hanging from Tree Mistaken for Halloween Decoration
FREDERICA , Del. (AP)- The apparent suicide of a woman found hanging from a tree went unreported for several hours because passersby thought it was a Halloween decoration, authorities said.
The Delaware State Police said a 42-year-old Frederica woman apparently climbed up a tree with a length of rope and hanged herself from a branch sometime after 9 p.m. Tuesday.
The body, suspended about 15 feet above the ground, was easily visible from passing vehicles for several hours Wednesday morning.

Dead man slumped on balcony mistaken for Halloween decoration
A 75-year-old dead man sat decomposing on his Marina del Rey balcony for days because neighbors thought the body was part of a Halloween display and didn’t call police.
Mostafa Mahmoud Zayed had apparently been dead since Monday with a single gunshot wound to one eye. He was slumped over a chair on the third-floor balcony of his apartment on Bora Bora Way, said cameraman Austin Raishbrook, who owns RMG News and was on scene Thursday when authorities found the body.
Neighbors on the 13900 block of Bora Bora Way told Raishbrook that they noticed the body Monday “but didn’t bother calling authorities because it looked like a Halloween dummy," he said.

Neighbors thought beheading was Halloween display
They’re used to jack-o’-lanterns and plastic skeletons when Halloween rolls around in sleepy Farmingdale — so neighbors on one block thought someone really got creative with a headless body on one side of the street and a bloody noggin on the other.
But this was no decoration.
It was the remains of beloved SUNY Professor Patricia Ward, whose was butchered by her psychotic son before he threw himself in front of a Long Island Rail Road train.
“I saw a head . . . It had long, black straight hair. I did a double-take thinking it was a stupid little shrunken heads you would hang as a Halloween thing,” said Dale Silverman, 59, who had been driving home on Secatogue Avenue near Eastern Parkway on Tuesday night.
“I laughed like an idiot. I just laughed.”
Neighbors who saw the body — which lay out in the open for more than 20 minutes until cops covered it with a sheet — touched it to make sure it wasn’t plastic.
