Whoopi on Viola's Emmy speech: There's plenty of opportunity
Quote:
Whoopi Goldberg disagrees with Viola Davis’s Emmys speech:
“I’m not sure what it means. Opportunity to do what?… The truth of the matter is there’s been plenty of opportunity. I mean, Scandal. Let’s just start with that. Kerry Washington is there and she’s working her booty off, but they didn’t vote for her. So, maybe the question is, ‘What do you have to do to get voted on?'"
She's one of those new blacks, too. Not only that, she ALWAYS plays on the guilty party's side and gets mad when people tell her about it. See Mel Gibson and Bill Cosby.
It's funny that she named Kerry Washington, who was the first black woman nominated for a Lead Actress since Cecily Tyson back in 1995, twenty years ago. So, Viola IS right.
To be fair, i feel like she's saying racism exists, just that award shows don't recognise shows with leading black roles enough vs not shows with leading black roles existing.
She literally doesn't make any sense. She should go back through her filmography to discover all the coons she portrayed over the years then let's hear her say "There's always been opportunities..."
Viola is specifically speaking about roles that are ripe with respect and dignity. Those that written with every intention of giving the actress every opportunity she can to display the talent she has in her. Roles that are worthy of prestigious award nominations and critical praise. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand this.
To be fair, i feel like she's saying racism exists, just that award shows don't recognise shows with leading black roles enough vs not shows with leading black roles existing.
And that could be a true statement as well. The Emmys tend to go with white humor and dramas led by white actors. I mean, how did The Wire not get its recognition at the Emmys? I even think Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was done wrong.
