I thought everyone knew this. I feel conflicted because we shouldn't just toss out history cause it doesn't fit with what we find acceptable today, but I think we should be more honest about what he did to the natives. We have to explain it better to kids.

He is obviously an important figure in history, but the way people act as if he was some heroic person who saved America from the monsters that were living in it is not the tea.

To truly move on from pain and hurt you've got to forgive the person who caused it. Look it up.

I can't at the "to move on you have to forgive." The problem is he's taught in schools like a hero and has a HOLIDAY dedicated to him. I can forgive my ex's but I also don't celebrate their birthdays

Old news but it's always nice to have reminders so people develop better views
Two people in my history discussion class picked Hitler for their favorite historical figure, "not because he was a good person but because he was interesting" and they "liked WWII"
One month later I still make sure to sit far away from their crazy asses

The Tumblr SJW's are so annoying, god.
Might as well eliminate Thanksgiving, Halloween, Easter, Memorial Day, and literally every other holiday that revolves around someone's misfortune.

This is totally different.
This man caused the spread of diseases, wiped out native populations, caused the slave trade, the issue of colonialism and so on.
The man literally changde the course of human history and the expense of everyone else besides western Europeans.

If not, Columbus ordered that Taínos be “punished,” by having their hands chopped off, or they were chased down and had their limbs ripped off by attack dogs. They were often forced to wear their severed hands around their necks on chains until they eventually bled to death.

You know what's interesting, something similar to this happens to the people forced to mine for the minerals needed for our laptops and other electronics. Should we ban electronics because their creation is causing harm today as opposed to 400 years ago?
Quote:
Their bodies caked in dirt from the river beds they are forced to work in, African children are enslaved in lethal mines to power our love affair with the mobile phone.
The child miners of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) risk death to dig for a highly dangerous ore used in mobiles, laptops and games consoles.
For that paltry sum they work in narrow tunnels dug into river-beds which are at constant risk of collapse. Thousands have already died.
Coltan, which is highly toxic, is also blamed for birth defects in the areaswhere it is mined.
Glenn Lesak, who heads Save The Children's relief programme in Congo, estimates that between 5000 and 6000 child slaves are forced to work in the mines.

Everyone saying yes to the original post are being hypocrites by using a computer or phone!!
Suddenly the Gaga haters care about Columbus Day... Well, I guess that's a good thing since we all know they don't pay attention in school.

The guy was a piece of **** and he doesn't deserve his own holiday, but acting like the holiday is to celebrate the horribleness he caused as opposed to the assumption that he discovered our continent, is both ignorant and harmful. Not to mention most people don't even celebrate this holiday. There are some parades and that's about it. It's not like Christmas or Thanksgiving that are widely observed.

If it wasn't him it would have been someone else.
Unfortunately..the native tribes didn't stand a chance in those times of racing for colonies
It was always like that and it always will be like that
The more powerful will always win over the weaker
It's how it goes whether we like it or not

You have NO IDEA.
Columbus did NOTHING since he died and he thought America was India.
But y'all American and British people should blame yourself for what you ACTUALLY MADE to native americans.
Spanish conquerors respected those people and even mixed with them and married them etc.

Columbus was a vile piece of ****, I struggle to understand why someone who committed such atrocious acts should be honoured in any way, shape or form. Columbus Day should be remembered for the genocide that Europeans committed upon their arrival to the Americas, not as a celebration.

I knew it was violent, but not these details.
Quote:
From the very beginning, Columbus was not on a mission of discovery but of conquest and exploitation—he called his expedition la empresa, the enterprise. When slavery did not pay off, Columbus turned to a tribute system, forcing every Taíno, 14 or older, to fill a hawk’s bell with gold every three months. If successful, they were safe for another three months. If not, Columbus ordered that Taínos be “punished,” by having their hands chopped off, or they were chased down and had their limbs ripped off by attack dogs. They were often forced to wear their severed hands around their necks on chains until they eventually bled to death.
