I haven't watched it yet but I'm surprised that the ratings are so low. But then again, singing a song at the Oscars and walking a red carpet looking stunning doesn't really say much about acting chops.
The AHS cast members were all praising GaGa's acting ability but according to those who have watched, she was more than awkward in her scenes. I'm guessing the other actors were just talking her up in interviews cuz she was so nice on set. Riding the "nice" wave can get you far even if the actual skill is lacking.

I would watch the episode before coming for Gaga. Her, Kathy, and Sarah had the three strongest characters in the episode. The only angle in which the episode fell flat was the structure of the story line. The first episode was more about setting up a background and a place, rather than telling a story. From the reviews I've read, every critic expected the first episode to be action-full. I disagree with the critics when they said the episode was bad because it set up a setting, but I agree that the elements did not match. There was so much gore and sex packed into one episode that was only meant to set a background, that the episode itself almost became a joke.
