I have always wondered this too. A few of my African-American friends have Arab names. Like Wakeem. I've never asked them about it even though I was curious.

If these are Arabic names did they not know Arabs had African slaves too?

I don't see the difference. Both Europeans and Arabs purchased slaves from Africa.

I though Omar was a latin name

The black culture likes eccentric and jazzy. Individuality and standing out is also important to many.

this. I am part Moroccan and some of my cousins are black whilst others are white and others look mixed or typical arab etc.
Arab slave trades weren't as big I believe and what ha happened was very different. a lot were never really enslaved and were just given working contracts and ended up marrying family members or local farmers ect.
however I don't know too much on the topic and I could be wrong.

It was called the Trans-Saharan trade which led to the spread of islam through West Africa (where most of the slaves who found themselves in the Americas came from).
