The fact that it was actually down in the most important number, the 18-49 demo.
It's nice that overall, the show performed just average last night.
Miley knows she's popular with younger people. She's stated this several times. She also has quite a few fans in the 18-22 demo as well from what I've seen.
It was the season premiere...obviously it's going to pull bigger numbers. I honestly don't think it mattered that much who was hosting. Miley's also one of those people that a lot of people watch because they love to hate her.

Now if the ratings would have flopped would you be saying the same thing?
The season premiere of Saturday Night Live, with host and musical guest Miley Cyrus, averaged a 2.0 adults 18-49 rating in the 25 markets with local people meters, down a tenth from last year's season premiere with host Chris Pratt and musical guest Ariana Grande, which averaged a 2.1 adults 18-49 rating in the 25 markets with local people meters.
Note that “SNL” adds significant viewership via time-shifting, with originals last season growing by an average of +44% going from “live plus same day ratings” to “live plus seven day” in adults 18-49 (from a 1.84 rating to a 2.65).
