IFPI is a credible source. Do your research.
It's a committee of people who work in the music industry in over 50 countries.
Definitely more reliable than per say, Mediatraffic, 1 guy who sits at a computer, who isn't in the industry, and comes up with estimations.
Billboard, Official Charts (UK), Publications, and Labels cite IFPI reports in articles. It doesn't get anymore reliable in the music industry.

I mean if free streaming now applies to a songs chart position why not apply purchased ringtones?
I mean I don't actually buy ringtones, but I set whatever song I consider a favorite at that point in time. I casually buy singles every now and then but they're not always ringtone worthy y'know

No one laughing at the thought providing an argument as to why they shouldn't be counted

It's much better.

Ringtone sales are record sales like everything else. It's beyond stupid to me that people are willing to count free streams over paid sales as legitimate parts of peoples' stats. A good deal of Bey's biggest singles were during a time period that ring tones were selling at higher rates than digital tracks and actually had separate charts/certifications for ringtones and ringtones are still counted as tracked and counted as record sales by official sources. This entire debate is so dumb.

Billboard uses them too. It's a digital format
Billboard Bows Ringtones Chart

Billboard is launching a chart gauging the commercial popularity of ringtones. The Hot Ringtones chart will debut in the Nov. 6 issue of the magazine as part of a new Digital Entertainment special section.

Similar to Billboard's charts for record and CD sales as well as Billboard Radio Monitor's coverage of radio airplay, the new chart will reflect the "Top 20" polyphonic ringtone sales for each week, including song title, artist, previous week's position and number of weeks on the chart.

You lose.

RIAA introduces gold & platinum statuses for mobile Ringtones
Quote:
Despite the high price mobile phone operators and content providers charge for Ringtones, they have been selling like hotcakes since the time downloadable Ringtones first became available for mobile phones. Now it has come to the point where the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has decided to start introducing Gold, Platinum and Multi-platinum statuses for mobile phone Ringtones based on which sales rank it enters. Up until now, they have only been giving out Gold and Platinum-record statuses to top selling albums. The RIAA has set the following ranks for each status: Gold status for 500,000 downloads, Platinum status for 1 million downloads and Multi-platinum status for 2 million and greater. Polyphonic and monophonic Ringtones are excluded from certification. So far, the RIAA has certified 128 Ringtone titles, each with one of these three statuses. The RIAA aims to use this as a method to honour the artists with the highest success and have already issued several plaques that bear phones etched in gold or platinum depending on the status the artist received for their Rintone. The Recording Industry Association of America is expanding its repertoire. The organization responsible for doling out gold and platinum-record status to top-selling albums announced Wednesday that it would start recognizing ringtone sales in a similar way. So far, the RIAA has certified 128 titles as either gold (500,000 downloads), platinum (1 million) or multi-platinum (starting at 2 million). The ringtones considered are called Master Ringtones, ones that utilize the actual music and vocals of the artist's original song, not the beep-style versions available for phones without more melodious capabilities. The full article can be read here. With such a high price charged by most providers for Ringtones, it is hard to believe how well they continue to sell. In fact, when someone buys a Ringtone, they are actually paying up to €5 (here in Ireland) for around 10 seconds of a song! On the other hand, all a consumer has to do is send a text message to a certain number and they get the Ringtone then & there. However, most consumers are willing to spend anything to stand out from the crowd and a customised Ringtone is just one of these ways.

Ringtones sales are record sales just like music dvds, music videos (during the 90s), singles, Eps etc. All are record sales.

Ringtones cost $1.29, just like songs in the iTunes store, so if someone wants to use them they can. They fit under record sales for a song, and record sales for an arist.

This just reminds me of the mess that Paramore's Crushcrushcrush sold 6M in 2010 because of Rock Band downloads

Ringtones are certainly valuable and contribute a sufficient amount of revenues to be considered relevant to sales metrics.

It's STILL a digital sale. It's still SOLD and is counted as a record sale.
Everything has a separate chart
Album - BB 200
Airplay Chart
Hot digital chart
Streaming Chart
Single Chart
Ringtone chart
etc
You don't make any sense.
