With rare exceptions, parodies and viral videos of a given song only go viral if that song was already popular. So it's not like parodies are taking flop songs and making them go #1.

A recent example I can think of is that Steve guy who made a hugely popular video where he recreated the Wrecking Ball music video on ChatRoulette. That video was the reason Wrecking Ball got a 3rd week at #1, but that viral video was only as huge as it was because everybody was fascinated by the original WB video and it was constantly talked about (which then translated over to Steve's video). Had the video been recreating the music video of a less popular song, it wouldn't have gone viral and therefore the song wouldn't have received a big Hot 100 boost. So I don't get why that's considered "cheating the charts" considering the boost in streaming is due to the popularity of the song itself, and therefore that song deserves to go #1 or get whatever boost it gets.

Sorry sistren but those things had next to no impact on BB sale, the song performance was based off its MV alone.

It supposed to be Shake It Off ha endless parodies, that arobat dance, that police lipsync and more, but most famous songs benefit from these, so I dont see any problem here.

They are free to do anything to help them chart tho.

I don't think it's cheating but something can go viral if it's really bad too. People like to see something dumb that makes them laugh. I remember that dumb gangham style song. It was so goofy. It makes legit music fall away a little and pushes trendy, dumb songs to the top.

Thats mot true. Lorde was already #1 on the alt and rock charts a good 3 months before Royals took off at other formats.
