I will start with what I think is really important: It's always nice to win challenges and the like, but you should make your first priority writing something you are proud of. Some of my favorite songs ended up not doing so well on the challenge I wrote them for, but even now I love them.
If you do that, I think you will grow much more than limiting yourself to whatever you think/"know" the judges will like.
I say it every season, but it's because I think it's really important.
