Matt Damon is opening up about his thoughts on gay actors being open about their sexuality in Hollywood.
The 44-year-old The Martian actor toldThe Guardian that there were once rumors about him and best friend Ben Affleck being gay and it put them “in a weird position of having to answer.”
“I don’t want to, like [imply] it’s some sort of disease – then it’s like I’m throwing my friends under the bus,” Matt added. “But at the time, I remember thinking and saying, Rupert Everett was openly gay and this guy – more handsome than anybody, a classically trained actor – it’s tough to make the argument that he didn’t take a hit for being out.”
“I think it must be really hard for actors to be out publicly,” Matt continued. “But in terms of actors, I think you’re a better actor the less people know about you period. And sexuality is a huge part of that. Whether you’re straight or gay, people shouldn’t know anything about your sexuality because that’s one of the mysteries that you should be able to play.”
He's not saying it to be mean, he's saying it so gays can have successful acting careers. Thing is, people are still homophobic and hateful enough to find a problem with a gay male playing a straight male on screen.
He's not saying they should stay in the closet. He's saying they shouldn't be talking about their sexuality (not just gay actors, but also straight actors) so much because people judge their personal life and that traslates to their acting career and what people in general think about them.
This is advice to "survive" in a heteronormative world
He means well but we shouldn't just be trying to survive, we should be accepted with open arms smh. Straights don't have to worry about stuff like this
There are so many aspiring gay actors though and they all seem to have the most severe cases of gayface so it's like first of all, you're not even finna get cast with that mug and secondly, you don't even need to come out because your face does it for you. I'll take a chai latte to go, thanks.
