My Gen IV starter was Piplup, trash. I ended up leaving him after the gym in Pastoria, only time I abandoned a starter.

Mess. I abandon my starters all the time coz I dont use the postgames (except HGSS) so I just replay the main game. I usually use them on first playthrough though. The only time on first playthrough I abandoned mine was White 2, where I abandoned Oshawott so I could have the eeveelutions.

Totodile is trash during Johto gameplay, plus Feraligartz looks so ****ing ugly That's the only starter I've ever abandoned
It can't even learn Whirlpool I can't waste a spot in my party when going to catch Lugia like that

You can compare hydro pump to over heat and leaf storm/wood hammer though.

Overheat is 130bp (cuts special attack)
Leaf Storm is 130 BP (cuts special attack)
Hydro Pump is 110bp with no drawback except for accuracy.

Brine doubles in power if the enemy is at 50% health

Water Spout is extremely strong if you move first.

Scald burns the enemy

And Surf is the standard, strong water attack.

Fire just can't compete with grass types or water types. And water types learn a wide variety of ice moves to check grass.

Game Freak knows water is OP and probably won't give it a strong move like OH & LS.

I've used all of the Gen 1 starters, they all slay. I think my first RB starter was Bulbasaur and I've chosen it the most by far, with Charmander in last (pragmatism, as Princess Bulba slays the first two gyms whereas Charmander has such a rough time )

Gen 2 starters are tragic but my first and usual choice was Chikorita, and I usually chose Mudkip in Gen 3. Piplup was my first in gen 4, Oshawott in Gen 5. Poor fire starters, tho I chose Fennekin in Gen 6

Fire should have a priority attack (maybe Backdraft - Quick Attack/Aqua Jet clone), and we need more special priority moves in general (maybe a psychic one?). Naturally given to King Arcanine, of course

But no one is claiming that water is not OP. Your analysis is simply wrong.

Hydro Pump is more equivalent to Fire Blast, and by association Thunder and Blizzard. They all have 110 power. HP gains an extra 10 accuracy in comparison to Thunder and Blizzard while they gain a chance of paralysis or freeze. Fire Blast is 85% probably for the reason you said; fire can't really compete.

In FRLG though, Charmander got Metal Claw but because of Geodude and particularly Onix's high defense, you really still had to have Pidgey use sand attack, Pikachu static ha or Butterfree lower ha HP with Confusion first

In saying that... if another Gen 1 remake comes as part of Gen 6, Charmander might have it slightly easier if they don't change the level up moves since he learns Dragon Rage at 16. They probably will though.

In Gen III Grass starters were AWFUL though without a solid attacking move. Thank GOD for Energy Ball.

GEN II: Chikorita
GEN III: Prince Torchic
GEN IV: Priplup
GEN V: Snivy
GEN VI: Haven't played, but I'd probably go for Fennekin.

Sceptile is my fave Gen 3 starter final evo. So good <3

How so? This was before the physical / special split so Razor Leaf did well enough until you were far enough in the game. Giga Drain was also an option from Erika and then you got Frenzy Plant on Two Island. I don't remember using Sceptile in RSE. tbh. Always used Swampert and muddy Water or surf >.

I agree though. Energy Ball is a staple on my grass types now. Can someone explain what grass pledge does and how you "combine" it

Grass Pledge is just a regular grass type attack unless you're in Doubles/Triples. In Doubles/Triples, if combined with Fire Pledge or Water Pledge, you get different area effects.

I couldn't tell you specifically what they do, but there must be a good reason why nobody does this combo.

Never played Gen III (though in ORAS I chose Torchic)

And I loved all my starters and never abandoned them.

I even remember their nicknames. My Blastoise was named Chuckie, My Totodile was named Will, my Chimchar was named Prudence, my Snivy was named Olivier, and my Torchic was named Thrash.
