I think the audience were expecting something with more jump scares and an origin story explained by some psychic, and the fact that this movie does not do any of the above makes it a remarkable horrible in the 21st century.
The opening scene is by far the best one I've seen in recent memory. I love that you didn't know what you were looking at and it really put the audience into the realm of the movie. The concept I found to be really intriguing. Like the part where the main character is sitting in class and looks out the window...loved it.
I enjoy that there is no set time period. It doesn't feel like most teenage horror these days that constantly remind us that we are in 2015 and teens text and use social media.
As for the scary factor? I will say the opening is misleading and the rest of the movie is not as scary, but there were moments were I was in suspense.

Worthy of all the acclaim.
The touchscreen shell novel made it's time setting (2014-15) known though...
It's one of the greatest horror movies of all time. It doesn't surprise me that the basic people on this forum don't get it though, it's not a jump-scare-every-five-minutes kind of film.
I don't think it's one of the best horror films ever made but it's one of my favorites of the past five years. It was creepy as hell, gorgeously shot, well-scored, and Maika Monroe slayed.
