Rihanna is struggling to sell 5M records WW with her three latest singles and seems to be less involved in her music. Even if she does pass Mariah in record sales, she is never coming for her in album equivalents.

An album contains 12 "singles." Someone who likes your singles enough to pay $12.99 as opposed to $1.29 more likely has more of a connection to the music. I count album equivalents (i.e. TEAs/SEAs) so it takes all of that success in to account.

The UWC doesn't count recurrent stats. "Stairway to Heaven" is a bigger hit than anything from Mariah or Rihanna yet it is not on their charts. On top of that, obviously Rihanna would have more entries in the digital age. Physical singles hardly ever sold over 2M copies in the U.S. whereas digital singles can very easily soar past 5M copies.

Rihanna's not a vocalist and her tours are still underwhelming compared to her peers. Yes she's a bigger touring artist than Mariah ever was (granted Mariah made the choice to not tour), but it's not some massive achievement that outweighs everything Mariah has over her.

How is Mariah local when Mariah has a bigger global career than Rihanna?
