An investigation is underway after a mural dedicated to raising awareness of violence against black trans women was vandalized in Ottawa.
The mural, which was on temporary display downtown at the intersection of Bank and Somerset, came to life through the efforts of several community organizations including the Queer Mafia and the Black Collective. It was installed at the end of August as part of the city’s Pride celebration.
On Thursday morning, the message “ALL LIVE MATTER, NO DOUBLE STANDARD, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED” was found scrawled across the mural.
Specifically, a 'Black Trans Lives Matter' mural, but I made this thread to highlight how Black Lives Matter posters, signs, and such are being vandalized across North America.
Isn't it terrifying to live in a country that sees the statement Black Lives Matter as restricting or an attack?
Disgusting, I fail to understand how people can't seem to grasp the concept behind 'BlackLivesMatter'. So insecure.
'all lives matter, no double standard, you've been warned' is exactly why there's that hashtag in the first place.
Instead of vandalizing, they should have made their own.
It's just another situation that validates the idea that white people (not all) make it about themselves and have to interfere with things made by people of color.
