Sociologically speaking, most social movements learned from the strategies utilized during the civil rights era. Gay rights, women's rights, student + anti-war protests all learned a lot from the civil rights movement, in terms of organization, structure, etc.

The interesting thing about minorities is that they tend to look down on other minorities in order to elevate their own status. For instance, racial minorities being homophobic or ethnic immigrants being very restrictive of their women.
