Ok @ you refuting what an actual Gay Icon has fought for. I really don't get how ya'll put these mindless pop stars on pedestals bc they make EDM music and perform @ pride parades, but act funny when it comes to the people that actually did something for you to be where you are today.

I by no means am "acting funny". I have no issue with his statements and actually agree with them. I just don't know why you're using them to have this same conversation again. Hence me saying it's played out. Screaming being black is harder than being gay doesn't make any of those experience any easier.

But I feel that this discussion always goes in circles because no one wants to listen to what the other has to say.

There is a lot of selfishness and stubbornness involved and sometimes it's mostly from one side.

Sociologically speaking, most social movements learned from the strategies utilized during the civil rights era. Gay rights, women's rights, student + anti-war protests all learned a lot from the civil rights movement, in terms of organization, structure, etc.

The interesting thing about minorities is that they tend to look down on other minorities in order to elevate their own status. For instance, racial minorities being homophobic or ethnic immigrants being very restrictive of their women.

The title of the thread is kinda disjointed from the OP so I'll do my best.

I just don't understand why so many people feel the need to trivialize one issue over the other. they are completely different. Personally, I don't really feel like many gays are trying to "be the new black" but rather noticing similarities between the movements and learning from them. I also don't really get how the "gay world" is no more prepared to accept blacks than white society. Aren't many blacks a part of the gay world? And what is "white society"? In America, isn't everyone kind of a part of the same society? It's not like the US is segregated anymore.

The US is still very much segregated just not as in your face and more under the radar.

And while there are black gays most seem to want to focus on black homophobia which in turn alienates the black gays who want to be a part of the movement.

It gets tiring when you're a part of the community and having some white gays complain to you about homophobia. It's as if you're a part of the problem and you represent a whole group.

There needs to be changes when it comes to discussions of this nature. Building a bridge for good race relations is better instead of trying to burn it down each time it's trying to get made.

In my opinion from my experience being gay is in short harder than being black in present times. In present times. And when I say harder I'm speaking about growing up as a gay male the teasing you get from inside your own community. Cuz black people won't come at you for being black but a lot of issues came up because of my sexuality. I think the difficulty with being black is more complex. It's thinly veiled. We aren't getting lynched and teased like the past, but the system is set up more against my black side than my gay side. & that's a fact

The US on the surface look non-segregated. But the divides are still deeply rooted. I think this year Black Lives movement proves that.

I can definitely see racial separation and I know there's almost an invisible divide to a degree but I just figured it's kinda hard to pinpoint and address only "white society", "black society" etc etc etc.

No, I'm not from the US although I live and grew up directly across the river from Detroit.

Im confused is this just another way to say a gay man can marry a woman and be accepted as a straight man, but a black man cant change his skin color to be accepted as a white man?

People are more about hating than accepting.

Those oppressed due to their sexual orientation are not hesitant to oppress others due to their race. Vice versa, those oppressed due to their race are not hesitant to oppress others due to their sexual orientation.
