J.K. Rowling reveals Potter family history
Quote:
The wizarding family of Potters descends from the twelfth-century wizard Linfred of Stinchcombe, a locally well-beloved and eccentric man, whose nickname, ‘the Potterer’, became corrupted in time to ‘Potter’. Linfred was a vague and absent-minded fellow whose Muggle neighbours often called upon his medicinal services. None of them realised that Linfred’s wonderful cures for pox and ague were magical; they all thought him a harmless and lovable old chap, pottering about in his garden with all his funny plants. His reputation as a well-meaning eccentric served Linfred well, for behind closed doors he was able to continue the series of experiments that laid the foundation of the Potter family’s fortune. Historians credit Linfred as the originator of a number of remedies that evolved into potions still used to this day, including Skele-gro and Pepperup Potion. His sales of such cures to fellow witches and wizards enabled him to leave a significant pile of gold to each of his seven children upon his death.'"

Potter is a not uncommon Muggle surname, and the family did not make the so-called ‘Sacred Twenty-Eight’ for this reason; the anonymous compiler of that supposedly definitive list of pure-bloods suspected that they had sprung from what he considered to be tainted blood. The wizarding Potter family had illustrious beginnings, however, some of which was hinted at in Deathly Hallows.
|
How the Potters came in possession of the Invisibility Cloak:
Quote:
Linfred’s eldest son, Hardwin, married a beautiful young witch by the name of Iolanthe Peverell, who came from the village of Godric’s Hollow. She was the granddaughter of Ignotus Peverell. In the absence of male heirs, she, the eldest of her generation, had inherited her grandfather’s invisibility cloak. It was, Iolanthe explained to Hardwin, a tradition in her family that the possession of this cloak remained a secret, and her new husband respected her wishes. From this time on, the cloak was handed down to the eldest in each new generation.

Quote:
..Fleamont and Euphemia lived long enough to see James marry a Muggle-born girl called Lily Evans, but not to meet their grandson, Harry. Dragon pox carried them off within days of each other, due to their advanced age, and James Potter then inherited Ignotus Peverell’s Invisibility Cloak.

Okay, but I'd rather read this in a book, hint hint!
Why can't she just gives us another book and stop being so stubborn?

Wait the New Pottermore looks BEAUTIFUL but ugh I hate the fact they removed the going through the chapters stuff, I loved those. Now it's more like some information website only

I'm happy she's not doing more books It would just mess the story up imo. I prefer getting the side projects like all those tiny bits of infromation she gives through Pottermore, the Beedle The Bard/Quidditch/Fantastic Beasts books etc.

I would love her to make small stories. I don't need 300+ pages books. But maybe like 150+ pages with more debt about the backstories of some characters etc.

Really interesting read, but I had no idea the old Pottermore was gone! I'm going to miss that site. It was really fun trying to find everything in the chapters, duelling, making potions...

Not Harry being miserable at Potions when his ancestors invented Skele-gro and Pepper Up Potion. Not his hair being an untameable mess when his grandfather invented Sleekeazy's Hair Potion to tame wild hair.

She said she would write out a massive lexicon book with all this kind of info, with proceeds to charity... guess that didn't happen.

To be fair it was partially cuz Snape bullied him.
But he has great potions makers on both sides of his fam then, since Lily was great at them.

Tbh, Snape was really hindering him. He also became (kinda) **** at DADA when Snape started teaching it, it's not a coincidence.

Maybe it wasn't actually his at the time? Like he just found it? I can't imagine his parents would've had any great use for it. We know he definitely used it during Hogwarts but I remember Dumbledore said it was around the time Voldemort was hunting them down that James showed him the cloak.

I didn't get the impression Fleur was exactly what one would call poor, either. I doubt Hermione's parents were either, considering they were both dentists and she could afford her stuff when they converted their money to wizarding coins.

Yeah. And I feel like I remember reading that Albus got it from Harry, since James had the Maurader's Map. Or maybe that's just a fanfic thing.
