I guess the times are changing. Christmas music used to begin being played closer to Christmas, but now we have what is known as the "Christmas Creep."
The playing of Christmas music generally begins after Thanksgiving, which is when Christmas decorations would normally begin to appear in stores and in/on people's homes, but in recent decades the music and related decorations have been appearing earlier. Basically what is happening is the Christmas season is being extended because of the importance to our economy.
It's a holiday fueled by consumer spending and is a huge source of revenue for the music industry. They feel that by releasing the music early and by getting people in the mood, it will spark a rise in spending on gifts, etc. Also, from a record label's perspective, the sooner they can get the album out while still being somewhat close to Christmas, the more time it will have to catch on with listeners.
