Star Wars author clocks homophobes
Quote:
Chuck Wendig is a novelist, screenwriter and game designer (among the novels he’s published are Blackbirds, Mockingbird, Under the Empyrean Sky, Blue Blazes, Double Dead, Bait Dog, Dinocalypse Now, Beyond Dinocalypse and Gods & Monsters: Unclean Spirits), and he also writes the daily blog Terrible Minds.
A couple of months ago a reader of his young adult novel The Harvest complained about the inclusion of a gay character, and learned a valuable lesson: Don’t piss off a person who writes creatively for a living.
Chuck delivered an epic response titled “Dear Guy Who Is Mad Because I Wrote A Gay Character In A Book.”
Chuck has just released the much-anticipated Star Wars: Aftermath, which takes place after the Empire is defeated in Return of the Jedi, and features the new gay character Sinjir Rath Velus.
Unfortunately, some Star Wars fans are not happy with this bit of inclusion, with responses ranging from “Sodomy is not normal and I am tired of the liberal media trying to make me accept this lifestyle,” to the bizarre notion that Wendig is “jumping on the Caitlyn Jenner bandwagon.”
Of course Chuck responded, and it’s as fabulous as his first.
“If you’re upset because I put gay characters and a gay protagonist in the book, I got nothing for you. Sorry, you squawking saurian — meteor’s coming. And it’s a fabulously gay Nyan Cat meteor with a rainbow trailing behind it and your mode of thought will be extinct. You’re not the Rebel Alliance. You’re not the good guys. You’re the ****ing Empire, man. You’re the ******, oppressive, totalitarian Empire. If you can imagine a world where Luke Skywalker would be irritated that there were gay people around him, you completely missed the point of Star Wars. It’s like trying to picture Jesus kicking lepers in the throat instead of curing them. Stop being the Empire. Join the Rebel Alliance. We have love and inclusion and great music and cute droids.”
