Can You Vote Against Gay Marriage & Still Be Accepting?
If Someone Votes Against Gay Marriage Do You Believe That They Accept And Tolerate it?
Some back story and why I am asking this question. I got into a heated debate with some people regarding gay marriage. The consensus is split down the middle. Since I know a lot of people on this forum are gay, I felt like it would bring up an interesting discussion here. The initial argument started when one individual's beliefs on gay marriage were questioned. He said he is ally to gay people but he does not think it was in God's plan and that he would vote against it. My side argued that this is intolerant to gay marriage and contradicts what he said.
We later received this text from someone else:
"Don't you know what the gay rights movement is, what the race issue is about. It's about acceptance and tolerance. A person doesn't have to believe in something to accept and tolerate it."
What are your opinions on this ATRL? Is the text right or wrong? If you vote against gay marriage are you still accepting or not? Why?
No, and I LOATHE the argument people use "I don't believe in gay marriage but I still support gays" like no you do not. If you truly supported gays then you would be totally fine with them having equal rights to straight people. If you don't believe gay people should be allowed to do everything straight people can under the law then you are homophobic, doesn't matter if you have gay friends or accept them so long as they don't want marriage equality.

VOTING against it means you want the BAN to pass. You want the law to be changed to specifically exclude a group of people. Voting to restrict any right explicitly attached to a group (the referendums tell you who it affects) isn't accepting.
Here's another way to look at it. NOM who became the business to get all the gay marriage bans on the ballot and eventually passed in the US has ties to groups who would re-criminalize sodomy in a heartbeat if they had the chance. Just take a look at their attack ads - are you really going to tell me you're all that accepting when you are on the same page when it comes to a law involving your gay friends and family? Those ads should be enough to tell you this ban is going too far.
