Hard Candy is THE most underrated, and in fact undeservingly hated album of Madonna's career. The ageists came out in force and declared that she was trend-hopping and attempting to be down with the kids by keeping up with the latest in music. However what they failed to note was that the music Madonna put out was some of the freshest, urban & R&B inspired pop that has ever been put out.
The albums starts off with the sex ANTHEM that is "Candy Shop", the beat forcing literally everyone that listens to get down low and grind.
"4 Minutes" delivered as an ~iconique~ vid with J.T., plus was a massive international smash that had she been 15 years younger would have slayed charts, but did well nonetheless.
"Give It 2 Me" is the catchiest song of recent years, with the endless "Give it to me, yeah, no one's gonna stop me, now" lyrics.
"Heartbeat" the emotional and funky about feeling new love inside and out.
"Miles Away" made us all weep for long-lost loves whether it be a place, person or time.
"She's Not Me" was a MaRy-esque foretelling for Gaga, but considering this came out pre-Gaga we'll never really know who she was talking about as when the song was written she was supposedly still with Guy. Guess there was another woman early on!
"Incredible" is unfortunately a delete-able low-point of the album, but still better than half your faves' discogs so not bad considering really.
"Beat Goes On" features king of shoes Kanye West, and is yet another iconic moment on the album when the music is just so good it SQUEEZES life out of you.
Just when you're recovering WHAM BAM "Dance 2Night" comes along and you WILL lose your ****.
"Spanish Lesson" reminds us of Madonna's focus on education and charity as she educates us through how and what to say to any Latin lovers we should hope to meet. Now that she's done with Jesus Luz - go get him gurls!
The album takes a dark, ballad-esque turn with "Devil Wouldn't Recognise You" and it really is a powerful song.
Rounding off this flawless album, the perfect combination of sweet sticky fun pop, and the hard power of urban beats, is "Voices", about relationship power-plays and can be viewed from a larger human experience level, about power struggles, rich and poor, class, race, sexual orientation, religion etc.
Then the queen had to come along and serve this delectable album via the means of her BEST EVER TOUR, still the highest grossing tour by a female artist over 5 years later. The massive production and level of expert talent deployed into the making of the show meant the album and timeless songs travelled far and wide.
So tell me - why does this album get hate when clearly, as all evidence and fact shows, it's anything but "flop album".
