I've grown to appreciate Hard Candy more with time, but the only reason it can be classified as ahead of its time was because it was so far behind its time that it happened to be closer to when the Pharrell/Timbaland/funky disco revivalism stuff started in 2013 than its predecessors in sound. It has its flashes of dim brilliance, but overall it was the first time in her career that she sounded truly reductive.
