Demi has promoted just as much as Ari fro her last album and it only spawned one moderate hit single whereas Ari's spawned 4 smash hits and 1 moderate hit.
Well... What was Demi's bigger promo spot during the DEMI era (I guess you mean this era)? X Factor USA for Neon Lights? the TCAs for Made In the USA and RDC? Heart Attack at Ellen? Ariana performed in every award show..
The GP knows Selena Gomez can't sing, and is never going to buy her albums. They buy her songs when they're catchy and worthy, and Good for You pales in comparison to some of her older songs like "Love You Like a Love Song", "Naturally", "Come and Get It", etc. that had more replay value. With the rise of streaming, it makes them even less likely to buy her songs.
Demi Lovato, albeit more talented than Selena, is the butt of many jokes and has one of the most cringeworthy personas. All she has done in the past few years is talk about her "struggles" and her "issues" and it got to the point where it was past "inspirational", it's all she's really known for. Her music is faceless and could be sang by anyone, aside from a few personal album tracks and "Skyscraper". Her image is bipolar, one minute she's saying she "wants to be a role model", and the next she's scantily clad singing a song about sex and faux-lesbianism.
The upside to them, is they have very dedicated fanbases. It's certainly not half as big as someone as say, Taylor Swift, but at least there will always be people supporting them, (pretty much the kids that grew up with them watching Disney Channel). But the general public is just gonna see their albums in Target and on iTunes and not even think twice. Especially with their new hyper-sexualized album artworks, they're probably just going to roll their eyes and deem them "Miley copycats" if anything.
But we are saying nothing but the true, you can't compare Ariana's promo to Demi's or Selena's (though the last one had better promo than Demi) lol
I hope that with their new teams, both Demi and Selena can get bigger promo than what they used to have. (Demi is already having better promo and Selena can but she doesn't want to promote)

Demi has a number one album (3 other albums that debuted within the top 5), four Gold-certified albums, 5 Platinum singles, 2 multi-platinum singles, 1 Gold single, a couple of top ten hits (and those are just her U.S. stats), and she can sing. Seems like she's doing fine to me.
To answer your question, Ariana receives more support, which is what it all boils down to at the end of the day. Some artists simply receive more support than others, and that's that. Good for her and stuff

Ariana isn't lazy and actually gets off her ass and promote unlike that peer, which is why she gets outstanding treatment from her label and management. It's all about work ethic, paulie.
Selena's numbers for GFY are good considering that she didn't promote it, a low budget video and it wasn't exactly a bubble gum song made by Max Martin.
By the way I overall agree with people who says that they're still in a transition part of their careers.
