Growing up in the 80s the AIDS scare was blown up big and portrayed as a gay disease. Generally speaking, if you were gay people thought you will die of AIDS sooner or later. That brought a big stigma which is I suppose the reason why Freddie Mercury never told anyone about his illness till very late.
How has this stigma developped the last 30 years? Do you feel like there is a stigma, like when you come out people start to preach about AIDS? Has the community changed at all with regards to the illness, as generally speaking gay men are seen as very promiscious.

Sort of, when one of my friends donated blood she got asked whether or not she has had sex with any men who have had sex with other men or someshit.

I forgot about that, I remember reading that gay men are not allowed to donate blood in some/most(?) countries.

I mean gay's aren't allowed to donate blood. That says It all. I think only uneducated (religious) people think of AIDS when It's about gay people.

I was never surrounded by dumb people so I've never experienced that kind of stigma.

yes. Just even think about dating a gay person with HIV/AIDS. Some people would would have reservations because of his status.

Even saying HIV instead of AIDS shows a need for education around the topic. AIDS is a clinical diagnosis to specify the progression of the HIV virus. Not everybody who is HIV+ will develop AIDS. And in most cases it can be prevented.

Yes. Not just gays but it's a stigma in general. People are always like "they deserve to die for being careless" but like, no one deserve to die for something they was trying to enjoy. Plus they're usually clocked by excuses that were accidents.

AIDS is the ending stages of HIV. You have to have HIV first, which eventually turns into aids if it gets super severe.

You could. Protection is a MUST. But some guys are stupid or uneducated on the topic and accidents do happen (my condom broke one time ; I'm clean though).

Absolutely. Not quite to the same extent as there is more education and awareness on the subject currently, but yes.

You are right as tragic as it is. In my younger days whenever I would hook up and I mentioned using condoms they would ask "aren't you on the pill?"

Yes I get that but back in the day there was no such thing, HIV was a death sentence. Since that all changed now, it made me wonder if that whole stigma also changed.
