Lady Gaga enters Oscar Race with TIHTY
BEST ORIGINAL SONG: LADY GAGA ENTERS OSCAR RACE WITH TILL IT HAPPENS TO YOU
Quote:
With September’s #1-debuting Cheek to Cheek album, a beloved performance at the Oscars in February, a global co-headlining (sold out) summer tour with Tony Bennett, and an upcoming lead role in FX’s American Horror Story: Hotel, Queen Mother/Eternal Goddess of the Choral Arts Lady Gaga is in the middle of a epic reinvention of spiritual proportions, one that could very well lead to an Oscar nomination at the 88th Academy Awards.
Gaga and Diane Warren collaborated on “Till It Happens to You,” a rousing, beautiful, stringy-and-soaring ballad for The Hunting Ground, a documentary from the director/producer duo Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering about rape on college campuses. While portions of the song can be heard in the film, which premiered at Sundance in January and released to a limited number of theaters in February, the Nile Rodgers-produced track has yet to be heard in its entirety until it leaked today across various social networks.
Unless some weird technicality arises, “Till It Happens to You” seems to be eligible for the Best Original Song Oscar. Unlike pop music’s resident “show up for the check” diva lite Rita Ora last year, Gaga actually co-wrote the song she’s singing, which makes her eligible for a nomination as well.
Warren, who adds even more credibility to the song’s potential, has a storied history with Oscar. Seven nominations in the Best Original Song category have punctuated her career from 1988 (“Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” from Mannequin) all the way up to the most recent Oscar ceremony (for Beyond the Lights‘ “Grateful”), but she has yet to win. After Gaga’s unanimously-praised performance at the 87th Academy Awards, there’s no doubt that she’s occupying space at the forefront of Oscar voters’ attention. The press for American Horror Story has been quite strong and should carry through most of awards season as the show progresses (Gaga will reportedly star in 8 of season 5′s 13 episodes), and The Weinstein Company (Radius-TWC distributed The Hunting Ground) should find it very easy to capitalize on her mainstream resurgence and get this song in front of industry voters. That’s not even taking into consideration how charismatic and captivating a performer Gaga herself is. She can charm a pub, she can charm an arena, or she can charm the world at the drop of a hat. Take your pick.
Let’s not forget that Dick and Ziering also have a pre-established standing with The Academy. Dick was first nominated in 2005 for Twist of Faith. Ziering joined him for his second nomination in the Best Documentary Feature category for 2013′s The Invisible War. Both have a certain amount of clout in the category, but a campaign for The Hunting Ground itself might be a little farfetched at this point, given that it’s an early release that made only a small splash at the box-office ($400,000 domestic), though it did hit big with critics (77% on Metacritic, 92% on Rotten Tomatoes) and will play well thanks to important, highly topical subject matter. The Academy typically ventures outside its normal wheelhouse when it comes to Best Original Song, seeing as Begin Again, Beyond the Lights, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, Country Strong, Chasing Ice, and Paris 36 are just a handful of examples from the last 6 years of the diverse array of films that often appear in this category without crossover into any other category.
It’s worth noting, though, that films (and their nominated songs) like Chasing Ice and An Inconvenient Truth appeared in the category (and even won in the case of the latter) as films with a relevant social/political/environmental message, and that falls in line with The Hunting Ground‘s trajectory. The song will also reportedly be used in a fall PSA aiming to raise awareness of and action against rape on college campuses. The clip was reportedly directed by Catherine Hardwicke. It’s unclear whether the track will also receive a music video or not, but if it does, Hardwicke is the likely director.
It was also announced that Lady Gaga is an Emmy-nominated producer as of today for her work on the Cheek to Cheek Live variety special, which aired earlier this year on PBS. If her work on American Horror Story is any good (judging by tweets from the likes of co-stars Kathy Bates, Matt Bomer, and Angela Bassett, it is) Gaga could also be looking at a Golden Globe nomination this year. Heap on another potential Grammy win for “Till It Happens to You” in the Best Song Written for Visual Media category, and Lady Gaga has positioned herself firmly atop the game once again.
